I am thinking about "Pulling the pin and moving to Queensland".....to borrow the cheesy quote from the Oz Government Website. I know, WTF? I have never left the VTA. But I think if I am ever going to see the world and travel, now is the time. What an experience it would be. I already live by the "No Worries Mate" way of life anyway.
Why Australia?
It is gorgeous, great surfing, lots of kayaking opportunities, and a great culture to explore. Yet, more importantly, there is a great opportunity to work as a Paramedic there. Apparently there is a PM shortage and they are offering permanent work visas and 5K moving expenses to qualified Paramedics. Paramedics are second only to lifesavers in Australia as the most respected professions. The scope of practice for PMs there is also very broad and the pay is a lot better as a NHS/ Govt. employee. Also, the cost of living is cheaper than VTA.
I have been doing a lot of research, and have been pondering the move since December. Everything I have read or seen, is reassuring my decision to relocate.
I am currently gathering all the information required for the extensive application. I hope to send it off within a week. My next move is to visit this fall or winter. I have a place to stay whn I go out there to visit, so that will help.
I will keep everyone updated and plan to post pics of where I am thinking of going in Queensland.
Wish me luck.

I am biased, but you have picked a great spot! We moved to Gold Coast from Melbourne in 2004 and haven't looked back - originally from UK.
Probably the single biggest difficulty for people moving to Gold Coast is making a living, so if you have that covered your transition should be "sweet"!
Lots of places to kayak and Aussies are sports mad. Sounds like you will fit in well!
Annie...thanks for the reassurance. It is a big decision to move from California to Australia, but I am hearing nothing but positive things. Yet, my Kiwi friend talks a lot of smack about Australia...in fun though.
It is nice to hear back from a local that is positive about an american/ seppo moving to their community. I am a bit worried about thr reception there. But believe me...I am not the typical american, and am looking forward to experience everything about the gold coast and australia for that matter. I checked out your blog and will find it very useful. Thanks again
Samantha
You absolutely, positively, should do this. Not only because I need somewhere to stay when I visit!
You will get homesick at times, sure. But you will never regret the experience. I'm so happy to hear things are moving along with your plans!
Dooooood, Sammy, I know I am late to the party here, and just catching up, but this sounds SOOOOOOO exciting. Wow. I am in full agreement with Bex. You gotta do it!
Sorry for my excessive use of the letter "o" this evening. Whatever. I'm just totally jazzed for you.
Also, it was great running into you in Vta!
Also, who says "jazzed" anymore? Gah!
Cheerio, deario. Can't wait to read more about this adventure.
